I printed and hung this meme on an Instagram worthy, rose gold glitter rimmed cork board in my kitchen as a daily reminder of the standard to which I aspired for years after I found online back in 2013.

My Mother came to visit me in Portland for the first time in 2016 or so. Upon entering my apartment, she dropped her bags and wandered around my somewhat spacious, freshly dusted apartment to inspect her daughters dwellings. When she made it to the kitchen, she noted the cleared counters and might have commented what a departure that was from her childhood understanding of me. As she turned to exit, she paused at the door way as something had caught her eye. She stood there for a moment, eyes weaving the words, and silent. After what felt like a 90 second glare, she squinted.

“I have the same hours as Beyonce, huh?”

And before I could chime in with my chipper millennial regard, she went off.

“THAT BITCH has a cook. THAT BITCH has some maids. I BET she got a few drivers, a nannies, a personal trainer, somebody whose only job it to go to the damn grocery store and somebody else to pick out her panties for the day and a whole bunch of other people that do everything else I never even thought of. THE HELL I got the same damn hours as m*ther f*cking ‘Beyonce.’ HOW DARE YOU.”

And she whipped out of the kitchen with a huff and a grimace and we never talked about it again.

Also, that meme is no longer posted anywhere in my home. Tho I do watch Beyonce’s Coachelle performance almost weekly as a reminder of the life I want to live.
